Microsoft is transitioning to a modern print infrastructure with a universal “driverless” model that includes inbox drivers using the Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) Class Driver. This update reflects Microsoft’s heightened focus on security. To support this, they have introduced Windows Protected Print Mode (WPP), designed to block and eliminate all third-party print drivers, minimizing print-related vulnerabilities.

In response, Xerox has created a Print Support App (PSA), accessible through the Xerox Print and Scan Experience App, that customizes the user experience of the generic IPP Class Driver, adding advanced printer features and offering an enhanced user experience for all compatible Xerox devices.

Xerox Print and Scan Experience App FAQ

Print drivers have been known to be a security vulnerability and Microsoft says 9% of Windows security issues reported to the Microsoft Security Response Center (MSRC) were caused by print bug related issues. Microsoft found that Windows Protected Print Mode mitigated over half of those vulnerabilities. Print bugs played a role in Print Nightmare which “Microsoft warned that hackers that exploit the vulnerability could install programs, view and delete data or even create new user accounts with full user rights. That gives hackers enough command and control of your PC to do some serious damage.” (CNN, Microsoft issues urgent security warning: Update your PC immediately, July 20221)

The phasing out of traditional print drivers is targeted for July 1, 2027. At that time, With the exception of security-related fixes, third-party printer driver updates will no longer be allowed.
