As part of JustTech’s certified remanufactured process, a hard drive image overwrite is performed on the multifunction copier using Xerox’s triple-pass algorithm thereby making the data from previous copy, print & scan jobs inaccessible and not recoverable.  Generally, when a job finishes, this data is deleted, but may still be recoverable using forensic tools. Xerox’s Image overwrite is effective at eliminating this job data from the hard drive once the data is no longer needed. Xerox’s features also scrambles the data with the user data encryption feature. This further protects data at rest from unauthorized access.

There are big risks for clients with data that can possibly remain on a copier when the device leaves their location. In 2013, The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and Affinity Health Plan, Inc. settled potential violations of the HIPAA Privacy and Security Rules for impermissibly disclosing the protected health information of up to 344,579 individuals when it returned multiple photocopiers to a leasing agent without erasing the data contained on the copier hard drives. The settlement was for $1,215,780.

For new and remanufactured deployed multifunction copiers at clients locations, Image Overwrite and other security features are enabled by a JustTech certified Network Analyst during the installation. JustTech then takes the extra precaution of running a full Image Overwrite when the device is returned at the end of its contract term as part of our remanufactured process. Previous client data is inaccessible and not recoverable. This provides peace of mind to clients who have new and remanufactured multifunction copier equipment.
