In recent years, ransomware type attacks are increasing and affecting all types of organizations. According to the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), “Ransomware is a type of malicious software, or malware, designed to deny access to a computer system or data until a ransom is paid. Ransomware typically spreads through phishing emails or by unknowingly visiting an infected website. Ransomware can be devastating to an individual or an organization.”
It is currently impossible to know how much ransom is being paid by U.S. businesses, governments, schools and non-profits to these ransomware captives but the Emsisoft Report estimates it was in the excess of 7.5 billion in 2019. The state of Louisiana recently passed a law requiring managed service providers disclose cyber security incidents to the state and to notify them when a ransom for one of their clients is paid.

Be Vigilant
Hover over a link before you click it on an email or website. See if the link is misleading you and not sending you to the appropriate website. Also check the senders email by double clicking on the name and see if it is a false email and someone is spoofing a name. Be on the lookout for bad actors trying to get you to do something that could cause harm to your network.
